About Dr. Matthews
A native of Stony Brook, New York, Dr. James F. Matthews is a highly experienced optometrist with a diverse background in eye care. After graduating from the University of New Mexico, his journey began as a health education teacher and coach in Amenia, New York. While accompanying his father for cataract surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, he discovered a unique program in orthoptics, which piqued his interest in eye care. Dr. Matthews applied for acceptance and soon found himself training as an orthoptist, specializing in examining patients with strabismus (cross-eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), and neurological problems affecting eye alignment.
Years of Experience:
With extensive experience at Hampton Eye Physicians and Surgeons in Southampton, New York, where he worked for a decade, Dr. Matthews honed his skills as an orthoptist and served the community diligently.
Expansion of Knowledge:
Driven by a passion for learning and providing the best care possible to his patients, Dr. Matthews made the decision to become an optometrist. He pursued his optometry degree at the prestigious University of Alabama School of Optometry in Birmingham, where he graduated cum laude and was 4th in his class. During his time there, he worked with Alabama Ophthalmology Associates, gaining invaluable experience in working with children with strabismus and amblyopia and adults with neurological eye diseases.
Practicing Optometry:
After successfully completing his optometry degree, Dr. James F. Matthews established his practice in Greenville, North Carolina, and later expanded his services to Indian Trail, North Carolina. With his diverse background in orthoptics and optometry, Dr. Matthews offers comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages, from children to adults.
More Expansion of Knowledge:
COVID-19 changed life for many of us. Dr. Matthews closed his practice in 2020 during the pandemic. It didn't take long before he decided to use his idle time pursuing his Master's Degree in Public Health at the University of South Carolina, graduating in 2022. This experience complements his many years in the healthcare field.
